Lands of the Curry Leaf Lunch with Peter Kuruvita and Jo Mcrae
Sunday 4th June, renown Australian chef and restaurateur Peter Kuruvita is teaming up with his old friend and ex Paperbark Camp chef, Jo Mcrae for a one off lunch, celebrating Autumn Food Month with a sumptuous feast featuring recipes from his book, Lands of the Curry Leaf.
This incredible collection of recipes is a celebration of all things vegetable and their growing prominence at our tables and takes us on a culinary journey of discovery through the subcontinent–from Bhutan, Nepal and Afghanistan to India,Pakistan, Bangladesh and his home country of Sri Lanka. Showing that vegetables, grains and pulses can be culinary stars, Peter takes simple, honest, health-giving ingredients, adds a host of exciting spices, and transforms them into a complete and joyous meal.
The book is a reflection of the changing dialogue about what we eat, as the world embraces the idea of a meal where flesh is not the main event and this lunch hopes to inspire us all to think about our own consumption and to consider a more sustainable approach to food.
Born in London to an Austrian mother and Sri Lankan father, Peter Kuruvita spent much of his childhood in Sri Lanka before moving to Australia with his parents. Here he began his career as a chef and became well known for his time at Sydney’s iconic Flying Fish Restaurant & Bar which he opened in 2004 and lead to diversification into cookbooks and some much loved television series such as 'My Sri Lanka with Peter Kuruvita'.
After taking the Flying Fish concept to Fiji for ten years Peter has more recently called Noosa home. His latest venue, Alba By Kuruvita, opened in December 2021 and is a beautifully designed food-lovers hub, combining a Restaurant, Bar, Café, Pizzeria, gourmet Providore and a state-of-the-art Cooking School.The menu features his signature style of fresh quality produce and local seafood, spiced with Sri Lankan and world flavours.
Jo Mcrae is a Shoalhaven local who fell in love with and pursued her passion for cooking, training to become a chef in Sydneys top restaurants of the time, including Bilsons where Peter provided guidance and inspiration and where they became life long friends. Jo is a quiet achiever who went on to become a successful hatted chef herself at Milsons in North Sydney and after a stint in London came home to Huskisson where we were lucky to have her join Paperbark Camp for a time leading the kitchen.
We can't wait to see these two together in the kitchen again, it is sure to be a day to remember!
